Hazardous Waste Compliance Unit Supervisor (WMS Band 1)
The Hazardous Waste and Toxics Reduction program within the Department of Ecology is looking for a supervisor for the Hazardous Waste Compliance Unit in the Northwest Region.
This position will lead 13 technical and regulatory staff to increase safe hazardous waste management and prevent hazardous waste pollution.
What will you do?
- Plan, lead, organize, and direct the work performed by the Compliance Unit.
- Develop, manage, and conduct programs and special projects related to technical assistance, compliance, and enforcement that take tactical advantage of resources internally and externally.
- Recommend and implement policies and procedures to promote hazardous waste management and compliance; and collecting data and experience for future rule development and amendment.
- Prepare, issue, and track formal enforcement actions – administrative orders and penalties, as well as expedited enforcement action offers – in the Northwest Region. Serve as the primary point of contact for Attorney General’s Office – Ecology Division.
- Build relationships and collaborate with internal and external partners and stakeholders to cultivate an environment of engagement.

Option 1
Eight (8) years of experience and/ or education:
- Experience: In environmental analysis, control, or planning
- Education: In natural or environmental sciences, planning, business, or public administration or closely allied field.
This experience may include:
- Planning, designing, and conducting environmental inspections, including remote inspections to meet program strategic goals.
- Leading teams/workgroups for special projects/tasks prioritized by management.
- Conducting complex or controversial enforcement or compliance actions.
- Providing technical assistance to the regulated community.
- Developing partnerships with other regional compliance units within the program, communities, businesses, and other stakeholders to respond to environmental issues.
Option 2
- Four (4) years of experience in environmental analysis, control, or planning
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, planning, business, or public administration or closely allied field.
This experience may include:
- Planning, designing, and conducting environmental inspections, including remote inspections to meet program strategic goals.
- Leading teams/workgroups for special projects/tasks prioritized by management.
- Conducting complex or controversial enforcement or compliance actions.
- Providing technical assistance to the regulated community.
- Developing partnerships with other regional compliance units within the program, communities, businesses, and other stakeholders to respond to environmental issues.
Option 3:
- Two (2) years of experience in environmental analysis, control, or planning
- Master’s degree or higher in environmental sciences, planning, business, or public administration or closely allied field.
This experience may include:
- Planning, designing, and conducting environmental inspections, including remote inspections to meet program strategic goals.
- Leading teams/workgroups for special projects/tasks prioritized by management.
- Conducting complex or controversial enforcement or compliance actions.
- Providing technical assistance to the regulated community.
- Developing partnerships with other regional compliance units within the program, communities, businesses, and other stakeholders to respond to environmental issues.
