General Nonpoint Source and Shellfish Specialist (Environmental Specialist 3)
The Water Quality program within the Department of Ecology is looking for a Senior Nonpoint Source Water Quality Specialist in our Southwest Regional Office in Lacey, WA.
In this position, you will help reduce land use impacts on water quality and shellfish by meeting and working with landowners and other government and tribal partners. You will help identify and respond to water quality issues, nonpoint source pollution, and shellfish bed closures.
What will you do?
- Administer water laws and policies to correct land use impacts to water quality and shellfish issues by providing technical assistance and completing compliance and enforcement actions in the Southwest Region.
- Participate in water quality improvement teams and shellfish work groups to address bacterial pollution of shellfish resources.
- Use assessment tools, including GIS and water quality monitoring, to determine priorities in addressing pollution concerns.
- Represent Ecology in public information and education opportunities for nonpoint water quality activities.
- Foster relationships and work closely with our large number of community and business partners in order to address water quality issues.

Option 1:
Six (6) years of combined education and experience:
- Experience: In environmental analysis or control, or environmental planning, such as:
- Administering environmental laws and regulations
- Working with the public and/or private sectors to institute behavioral change
- Education: Involving major study in environmental, physical, or one of the natural sciences, environmental planning or other allied field
Option 2:
- Two (2) years of experience in environmental analysis or control, or environmental planning, such as:
- Administering environmental laws and regulations
- Working with the public and/or private sectors to institute behavioral change
- A Bachelor's degree involving major study in environmental, physical, or one of the natural sciences, environmental planning or other allied field.
Option 3:
- One (1) year of experience in environmental analysis or control, or environmental planning, such as:
- Administering environmental laws and regulations
- Working with the public and/or private sectors to institute behavioral change
- A Master’s degree involving major study in environmental, physical, or one of the natural sciences, environmental planning or other allied field.
Option 4:
- A Ph.D. in environmental, physical, or one of the natural sciences, environmental planning or other allied field
