Post Doctorate RA - Electron Microscopy

The Opportunity: Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a premier research institution powered by a highly educated, diverse workforce committed to collaboration and work–life balance. Every year, scores of dynamic, driven postdocs come to PNNL to work with world-class researchers on meaningful science, innovations and outcomes for the U.S. Department of Energy and other sponsors; here is your chance to be one of them!

Contribute to PNNL’s goals in materials sciences as part of the Lab’s Physical Sciences Division (PSD). As a postdoctoral researcher in the Materials Sciences group, you will join a multi-investigator team to explore the formation and assembly dynamics of nanoparticles, hybrid and macromolecular systems using high resolution, in situ, and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (TEM), as well as associated microscopy techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM). You will be mentored by prominent researchers in the field of material science within PNNL, as you develop a line of experimental research. You will work towards strengthening PNNL’s electron microscopy expertise and unique in situ TEM capabilities in the upcoming Energy Sciences Building and Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL), a DOE User Facility on the PNNL campus. The research will require a close collaboration with synthetic chemists and computational materials scientists to design and synthesize materials for investigation and correlate the results with the predictions of simulations.

The Ideal Candidate: If you are a postdoctoral researcher ready to test your talents and training and hone your skills at a national laboratory widely recognized for its work in the physical sciences, we want to connect with you. PNNL is committed to fostering a work environment that promotes inclusion, diversity, equity and accountability. We encourage all qualified applicants to apply; you do not need to meet all of the Preferred Qualifications to be considered.

What you will do:
  • Conduct in situ and ex situ TEM experiments to reveal the assembly dynamics of nanoparticle, hybrid and macromolecular systems.
  • Lead manuscript development efforts for the peer-reviewed scientific literature.
  • Interact, communicate, and develop experimental plans a diverse team of scientists.
  • Present research at group discussions, technical conferences and project review meetings.

Education and Credentials Necessary for Position:
  • Ph.D. in Material Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field
  • Demonstrated experience in operation of Electron Microscope
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills supported by peer reviewed publications

About PNNL: At PNNL, you will find an exciting research environment and excellent benefits including health insurance, flexible work schedules and telework options. PNNL is located in eastern Washington State—the dry side of Washington known for its stellar outdoor recreation and affordable cost of living. The Lab’s campus is only a 45-minute flight (or 3 hour drive) from Seattle or Portland, and is serviced by the convenient PSC airport, connected to 8 major hubs. Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications
Not all need to be met:
  • Hands-on experience in HRTEM imaging, Cryo TEM and in situ TEM.
  • Proven experience in the analysis of TEM data, such as diffraction patterns to identify crystal structures.
  • Foundational understanding of nucleation and crystal growth.
  • Experience in synthesizing well-defined mineral nanoparticles or single crystals.
  • Ability to work in collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams of scientists and technical staff.
