Public Health Nurse I/2

What you will be doing:
Public Health Nurse 1 serves exclusively as a trainee in a generalized public health nursing program to perform clinical duties as a Registered Nurse in support of a Public Health Center. The incumbent performs duties composed of constructive tasks designed to build a strong foundation in public health nursing through the progressive development of core competencies and standards of public health nursing practice.

Public Health Nurse 2 is the journey level of the series and applies generalized knowledge of public health nursing competencies, principles, and procedures. Incumbents independently provide a broad range of services to individuals, families, communities, and systems. At this level, Public Health Nurse 2 has onsite support from a higher-level Public Health Nurse to assist with care of highly complex and/or unique situations. Public Health Nurse 2 primarily works in a Public Health Center and may occasionally travel to outlying areas or communities to perform itinerant nursing services; however, itineration is not the incumbent’s predominant responsibility.

The working environment you can expect:
This position is located in Bethel - a hub community in southwest Alaska. Bethel is located about 400 air miles west of Anchorage and is only accessible by air and river. Bethel is the 9th largest community in Alaska with over 6,000 residents. Bethel Public Health Nurses (PHNs) provide services to Bethel as well as 48-50 Alaska Native villages spread over an area roughly the size of Oregon.

Minimum Qualifications
Public Health Nurse 1
Eligibility for licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Alaska;
AND
Current acceptance and enrollment in a Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science (RN-to-BSN) bridge program from an accredited college or university.

Public Health Nurse 2
Eligibility for licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska;
AND
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited college or university or Direct Entry Master of Science (MSN) in Nursing from an accredited college or university. 

FLEXIBLY STAFFED 
This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the 1 or 2 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level of the position. If filled at Level I, promotion to the Level II will only occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class and final approval by supervisor. It is recommended and encouraged that you apply for any/all levels that you are qualified for.
