Industrial Engineering Intern

June - August 2023 • Sunrise, FL

What I liked

Great benefits, workplace environment was nice, safe, and employees were very kind and helpful. The timeframe of the internship was also very convenient, and you are still able to enjoy your summer. Hybrid workplace was also very enjoyable to experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I had worked from the office more than I had, as I opted to work from home on certain days of the week.

Advice

Ask as many questions as you can and don't be afraid to make mistakes. Everyone is really nice, and many fulltime workers will extend a hand to help you, all you have to do is ask!

Software Engineer

May 2023 • Sunrise, FL

What I liked

I really liked the company culture, the individuals around me, the community around me, as well as the actual office. I felt very welcomed and was eager to work my hardest with those around me. I loved learning from professionals and establishing new relationships.

What I wish was different

Since this was more of a micro-internship (3 weeks long), we didn't get to do as much as we wanted, but we still learned a lot for such a short amount of time.

Advice

It's ok not to know things. The important thing is that you are passionately curious and always willing to learn new things daily. There are going to be many people around you who are willing to help, so don't be afraid and stay positive.

Data Analyst Intern

June - August 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved my experience at American Express mainly because the whole time I felt like I completing meaningful work. Personally, I love to feel like I'm improving something when working and I was able to feel that way everyday due to the projects I was able to work on. Additionally, they encouraged me to reach out to people who worked across the company to learn more about the business and through this I was able to grow my network and knowledge about different projects happening around the company.

What I wish was different

I wish I had taken more advantage of the groups/clubs within the company to build a network there. This would've helped me be able to have an even better grasp of different parts of the company as well as the chance to learn from some very successful people. In American Express everyone feels reachable so I wish I took advantage of that more.

Advice

Talk to as many people as possible! Establishing your personal brand is a big part of what Amex emphasizes for interns, so make sure to get your name out there. Also, don't be afraid to ask for more or less of a workload.

Software Engineering Intern

July - August 2020 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

Although it was virtual and only lasted for 6 weeks, American Express made the commitment to pay us as if we had a 10 week internship! I was able to work on a back end application to protect from bad/faulty user requests and integrate a circuit breaker to protect those services. Many other of my coworkers on different teams got the flexibility to work on other areas which they found super interesting. Overall, this was a fun and great learning experience where I really valued the mentorship of senior engineers overseeing my team.

What I wish was different

I definitely would have prefered a longer experience and have it in person as well! However, given the circumstances, I really enjoyed the overall experience and was grateful to receive it.

Advice

One advice I give when applying is to not be afraid or feel like you're not enough to apply. Do it anyway! You never know if you'll get a "YES" from the recruiters. Be yourself when talking to them, try and look at the values of the company you are working for and pinpoint some experiences where you demonstrated those qualities no matter how simple it may be. Also, review data structures and get some coding practice. Know your Java OOP fundamentals, at least the overall concept. Don't be afraid to get rejections. I got rejected so many times before getting this opportunity so keep persevering!

What I liked

It was cool being able to hear from and ask questions to some higher ups. The work culture is pretty relaxed.

What I wish was different

The pandemic changed the program from 10 weeks to 6 weeks, although with the same pay. I felt that the internship was not as impactful because of the length.

What I liked

It was a wonderful experience! We had a very flexible schedule and I got to learn new technologies, such as GoLang

What I wish was different

I didn't know much about what I was working on beforehand. While I know this is the case for most internships, I wish companies would let students know more in advance.

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • Sunrise, FL

What I liked

The company had a great atmosphere and I found that their internship experience for the Tech Programs was helpful in developing and learning about software development at a Fortune 100 company.

What I wish was different

I wish that the Human Resources department was more effective in relaying information to the interns. Many did not have an idea of what the status of their offer was or how they were going to be relayed the information until the very end of the internship. Also, after leaving the company, there has not been a positive sense of contact with the HR department aside from the offer letter.

Advice

I would advise to be very close and not be afraid to ask questions regarding the offer or the status of your job with your leader. They are all very understanding and if they express that they want you back, they will do everything in their power to do so.
